How to Swab Your Cheek

A simple cheek swab is all that is needed. No excessive amounts of saliva or blood are necessary. The inside of the cheek provides ample amount of DNA cells for a complete genetic analysis.The test results are received within 10 business days once the lab has received your specimen. Consultations should be scheduled accordingly.


Step 1: Complete Requisition Form
     Complete the Genetic ProtocolTM requisition form and sign.

Step 2: Abstain for 30 Minutes
     Abstain from eating, drinking, smoking, or chewing gum for at least 30 minutes before swab collection. 
     If possible, keeping the mouth empty for 30 minutes will yield even more cheek cells during the swab collection.

Step 3: Open Pouch and Remove Kit
     Tear open pouch 
       1) Remove plastic vial containing buccal swab from pouch 
       2) Fill out information on white sticker applied to swab vial 
       3) Write legibly and only fill out the items listed: 
            -Date of Birth – please indicate customer DATE OF BIRTH 
            -Specimen – this is your first and last name

Step 4:Twist Open Plastic Vial Containing Swab
       1) Twist open the plastic vial containing the sterile buccal swab (a single buccal swab is included per vial) 
       2) Carefully hold the stem of the swab and do not touch the tip with fingers or other surfaces

Step 5: Take the DNA Collection
It’s now time to take the DNA collection. 
1) Right Cheek* 
            1) For 60 seconds, rub the swab up and down inside the right cheek in a brushing motion while rotating the swab. 
            2) Proceed to swab along the top gum line to ensure that all sides of the swab are touched. 
 2)Left Cheek* (repeat process from right cheek) 
            1) For 60 seconds, rub the swab up and down inside the left cheek in a brushing motion while rotating the swab. 
            2) Proceed to swab along the top gum line to ensure that all sides of the swab are touched. 
3)Return the swab immediately back into the plastic vial 
       4)Screw the lid to the plastic vial tight 

*Note: Use firm pressure when swabbing, but not to the point of pain.

Step 6:Return Vial and Requisition Form
       1) Place the plastic vial and customer requisition form into the Genetic Protocol​ small blue pre-paid shipping box that’s                     addressed to the lab 
       2) Seal the box so that all the contents are secure 
       3) You may drop off the blue shipping box at the post office
